Homeschool math games – Make the Bond

Alright…so you all have seen my emotional mommy side…my not right funny side…are you ready for my nerdy, educational side??? SO…each day when we do math, momma always likes to play games. I *used* to be a public school teacher (before I had Parker)…and I constantly would have ideas that I WANTED to do but […]

I LOVE, LOVE YOUR AMAZING IDEAS! We do math obstacle course & I have the kids fish from the “alligator pond” grab numbers or try to get letters/numbers from the “letter fairy” & run, balance beam, swing, jump, roll or crawl. My hubby just laughs cause mommy gets just as much exercise as the kids. We needed a new, fresh idea. A game show is perfect for teaching speaking skills & confidence too!!! Love it, love it!!!! Praying for y’all!

Girl, you are NOT RIGHT!!! And I LOVE this video!!!!

Kristi Ausbrooks - September 19, 2011 - 7:01 am

Andrea,
Have enjoyed your blog for a long time. We too have a sweet Ethiopian boy, and we homeschool. We have been doing nursing home visits for a while now, and I like you ideas. I was wondering if you could send me the ideas you got from facebook friends. I am in need of some new ones (although as you said, it is just the visiting that means the most). Thanks!

I’ve been reading for a while now, too:) Thanks for the game idea…my homeschooling first grader has been making the bonds all week and loving it! He asks me to play it every day. Keep ’em coming!

birthdays, dress up and stepping out in faith

Sooo…because I knew we’d have birthday cake on Saturday for P-man…I decided to make a cookie cake for his birthday dinner. His b-day just happened to fall on Tuesday night–our regular “Dinner with the Dentons”. This November, we will be going strong with our Dinner with Dentons every Tuesday night…our commitment to community with old […]

Andrea, you cannot know how God uses you in my life. Tonight we start foster care classes, and I’m scared out of my gourd! What the heck are we thinking?! WHY are we doing this again? We can’t subject our children (adopted, 9 months and 4 years old) to this!! Fear. And “coincidentally”, God brought me this post and video through you. I’ve followed you for a year, being challenged and changed by your words. Thank you for that, for sharing what the Lord has done with you so that others can be blessed. We’re not called to go overseas (we tried! God said no!) at least not now, but we ARE called to those deprived and abused and lost children of the streets of our city. Who have been hurt by those who were charged to care for them. To get messy and dirty in our perfect American life. Scares the pants off me, but I think I need that. I’m too close to the world and my personal comfort. Thank you, thank you–that video was exactly what God knew I needed!

I love your encouraging words! They just fill my heart up to read them! I learned to cut my boys’ hair to save an extra $600-700 a yr to give. But this week my 7 yr old started fussing because he wanted to go to the “normal” salon “like his friends”, even though his hair looks perfect. SO as I cut his hair I began to talk about how he is sacrificing for God to help feed/clothe his older brother in Africa. We spent the entire time talking about how different his brother’s day was compared to his “privileged day”. He realized that being “different is special”, that even he can help others by making small daily sacrifices! I think it is so amazing that you are teaching your kiddos to have a heart for God. This was better than morning coffee! Thank you!!!

A Special Day

7 years ago TODAY… Marked one of THE most amazing days of my entire life and a pivotal day in my calling in life. I became a mom. Parker Young…our sweet little man was born. 7 years ago today… I was scared to death. Part of me wanting to run out of the hospital before […]

oh andrea, this was just beautiful. You truly captured how we mothers feel when God first blesses us with our first child…how our whole world changes and we see through different lenses!

Leigh Yearkey - August 23, 2011 - 6:57 pm

Andrea, That is awesome and so true about not knowing what life is really like until we have a child of our own! I didn’t know you have 5 children and my hat is off to you girl and congratulations. Well,as they say, God never gives us more than we can handle so he must’ve known you would be a great mom. I have enjoyed reading this and looking at your pics. I hope you and your family are doing well and continue to. Thank you for sharing this and I hope to see you soon and meet your kids one day when you’re in AC. Sincerely, Leigh

Happy 7th Birthday to Parker!!!

Our first day of school…

Just wanted to report and document our FIRST day of homeschool! I didn’t sleep a WINK Sunday night…tossing and turning…wondering if THIS was the best thing for our kids this year. EVERY year, we always reevaluate–and beyond a shadow of a doubt Rico Suave and I felt the Lord leading us to homeschool our children. […]

Hello! I am a lurker and decided to come out to ask you a question… I am homeschooling while on the mission field in South Africa. We started on Monday, also. We are doing the Apologia Astronomy and I was wondering what the actual name of the app you are using it? Did you get it from the Apple Apps? I am looking forward to following your new journey! Thanks!

Erin Crenshaw - August 17, 2011 - 6:39 am

What a GREAT day, Andrea!! I loved getting to “see” it!

Rebecca - August 17, 2011 - 7:14 am

Love it. Having the kids learn at their own pace is such an opportunity. I am homeschool preschooling this year. I need to check out the felt Bible stories that you mentioned.

Lara - August 17, 2011 - 9:18 am

I want to be in YOUR homeschool! Hee hee hee. I’m so glad for you that you’re enjoying it.

And Laney’s comment about her brain hurting is any teacher’s best compliment! When I was a teacher, on days kids said stuff like that I knew I was doing something right.

Alison - August 17, 2011 - 1:54 pm

So fun!!! Looks like it was a great day! And I wish that my alarm didn’t go off until 7:30! That would be great??? Ok, I am finally going to have to ask, what is Trader Joe’s??? We don’t have those down here in MS…

polly - August 17, 2011 - 3:12 pm

So glad y’all had a great first day. I told you last year that I knew you would make a wonderful homeschool momma. You have the gifts it requires or at least those gifts make it a bit easier. Can’t wait to keep up with your sweet family through out the school year. We haven’t even started (except my oldest)…. should have started this Monday but just couldn’t happen. Oh well, we’re shooting for next Monday :)PB

niki - August 17, 2011 - 4:29 pm

are you using “the story of our world”. I have searched for it and cannot find it…only “the story of the world” is it the same thing, and if not…where I can check out what you are using?

Dawn - August 17, 2011 - 6:59 pm

LOVE YOUR FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL!!! Can’t wait to get started here….chomping at the bit….waiting for this move to be done 🙂 so we can get to it!!!

Great fun!!

marci - August 17, 2011 - 8:56 pm

I have been meaning to comment forever and finally remembered to jump on the actual blog-I read on my iPad at night in Google Reader ;-). Anyhow, I thought today would be a good day to say hi and “I read your blog!” since I wrote a post about adoption on my homeschooling blog and I mentioned that I “stalk” adoption blogs ;-), thought you’d like to know yours is one of them!! http://1plus1plus1equals1.blogspot.com/2011/08/photography-adoption2-loves.html

I also wanted to welcome you to the homeschooling world, I LOVED your post with the denim jumper…cracks me up!!!

😉

Teacher workday:)

Oh my…momma’s heart is beating a little faster and I feel a bit excited and nervous just like I used to back in my teacher days. Monday is our first day of homeschool here, and I truly have no idea what to expect. Everyone tells me your first year is the hardest, but after that […]

Praying for you all!!! Cannot wait to hear how tomorrow goes;) i was homeschooled for 11 years……and i love hearing about other families that are starting!

Kelly - August 14, 2011 - 8:41 am

I loved this post! It reminded me of my homeschooling days and all my special times with my own mom and it also reminded me of my teaching days! 🙂 I have to say, the nursing home thing is by far one of the best ideas I’ve heard of for homeschooling families, i love, love, love it! Look forward to watching your new adventure unfold!

Erin Crenshaw - August 14, 2011 - 10:00 am

I am so excited for you guys, Andrea!!!!

Christy - August 14, 2011 - 2:41 pm

So excited to hear how everything goes, and also to hear how you entertain Isaac and Frank. That is our hardest thing around here because my littlest creates quite a distraction and makes learning tough sometimes since we dont have a room far enough away for him to make noise at his heart’s content without everyone else hearing. 😉 At least yours have each other. 😉 I will be using Story of the World for 1st grade too and excited to get going too! Hoping to learn lots from you and your creativity this year in homeschooling like I do in everything else! 🙂

Rory Cookman - August 14, 2011 - 6:05 pm

You’ll love it Andrea! I have no doubt you’ll be great at it too, from what I know of you through the blog world.:) I have four little girls 7, 4, 2, and 8 months (and more on the way from Ethiopia). This will be our third year of homeschooling, and even on the hard days I have never once regretted our decision. And you are so right to include serving others in your curriculum.:) Outside of all the fun and crazy learning we do around here, getting a chance to serve our neighbors and our church is one of my favorite things. Be blessed! Gonna be a great year!

Beth - August 14, 2011 - 10:04 pm

good luck tomorrow! You will have so much fun. I homeschool our crew. They are 6,5,4,3,3 and 1. Right now I’m focusing on the older 3 and adding the 3 year olds in in a few weeks. Our day starts with Bible and poetry. I use eating times as read aloud times because their little hands and mouths are busy:) After breakfast we do as much book time as they can take (handwriting, math, language, science worksheets). We do science experiments all together before lunch once or twice a week. Then during the little ones nap time we curl up and they read to me. You will find your groove…then loose it…then find a better one:) I’m excited to follow you and get some ideas!

Courtney - August 15, 2011 - 10:45 am

So excited to see all the fun stuff you come up with Andrea! It is my dream to teach my children one day and I get giddy just thinking about it. Have fun!
